A note on the random greedy independent set algorithm

چکیده
Let r be a fixed constant and let H be an r-uniform, D-regular hypergraph on N vertices. Assume further that D > N ǫ for some ǫ > 0. Consider the random greedy algorithm for forming an independent set in H. An independent set is chosen at random by iteratively choosing vertices at random to be in the independent set. At each step we chose a vertex uniformly at random from the collection of vertices that could be added to the independent set (i.e. the collection of vertices v with the property that v is not in the current independent set I and I ∪ {v} contains no edge in H). Note that this process terminates at a maximal subset of vertices with the property that this set contains no edge of H; that is, the process terminates at a maximal independent set. We prove that if H satisfies certain degree and codegree conditions then there are Ω ( N · ((logN)/D) 1 r−1 ) vertices in the independent set produced by the random greedy algorithm with high probability. This result generalizes a lower bound on the number of steps in the H-free process due to Bohman and Keevash and produces objects of interest in additive combinatorics.

Probabilistic Analysis of a Parallel Algorithm for Finding Maximal Independent Sets
We consider a natural parallel version of the classical greedy algorithm for finding a maximal independent set in a graph. This version was studied in Coppersmith, Rhagavan and Tompa [CRT] and they conjecture there that its expected running time on random graphs of arbitrary edge density is O(logn). We prove that conjecture.

متن کاملExperimental Evaluation of the Greedy and Random Algorithms for Finding Independent Sets in Random Graphs
This work is motivated by the long-standing open problem of designing a polynomial-time algorithm that with high probability constructs an asymptotically maximum independent set in a random graph. We present the results of an experimental investigation of the comparative performance of several efficient heuristics for constructing maximal independent sets. Among the algorithms that we evaluate ...
متن کاملTight Analysis of Parallel Randomized Greedy MIS
We provide a tight analysis which settles the round complexity of the well-studied parallel randomized greedy MIS algorithm, thus answering the main open question of Blelloch, Fineman, and Shun [SPAA’12]. The parallel/distributed randomized greedy Maximal Independent Set (MIS) algorithm works as follows. An order of the vertices is chosen uniformly at random. Then, in each round, all vertices t...
متن کاملA note on the random greedy triangle-packing algorithm
The random greedy algorithm for constructing a large partial Steiner-Triple-System is defined as follows. We begin with a complete graph on n vertices and proceed to remove the edges of triangles one at a time, where each triangle removed is chosen uniformly at random from the collection of all remaining triangles. This stochastic process terminates once it arrives at a triangle-free graph. In ...
